UPDATE, 5-22-16, 2:58 PM: Belton High School Principal Chris DuBois identified the deceased student as sophomore Alexander "AJ" Howard Sunday afternoon.

In an email sent to parents and staff, DuBois wrote, "His death is an incredible loss for our community, and I hope that you will join me in keeping his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers."

Counselors will be on hand this week for students in need.

According to the email, Howard was a member of the school's Marine Corps JROTC and Marching 100 band.


 

A Belton High School student passed away Saturday after a collision with an 18-wheeler.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:45 PM in the in the 10000 block of Highway 317 and FM 2483 in Temple. According to a Temple Police report, the 16-year-old boy was attempting to pass the truck in a no passing zone when his 2008 Hyundai was somehow struck by the trailer.

The teen, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace.

Detectives with the Temple Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction team said the circumstances of the collision are still under investigation.
