Police have released the cause of death of an elderly man whose body was found in Belton Lake Monday morning.

According to Temple PD spokesperson Shawana Neely, a preliminary autopsy revealed that 87-year-old Robert James McClure of Belton died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Neely said detectives found a .38-caliber handgun at the scene where McClure was discovered.

McClure's remains were first spotted by boaters at the base of a cliff near 666 Centex Sportman Road around 9:30 AM Monday.
