Crash on Texas Highway Leaves Five Dead

KWTX shared a report from the Associated Press that five people involved in a head-on crash in North Texas were killed.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the two-vehicle crash happened around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday on Highway 34. The crash happened near the town of Bardwell, which is just 40 miles south of Dallas.

Sara Warren, Department of Public Safety Sargent, said, Authorities are still trying to determine why a pickup truck coming from the westbound direction ran into a car from the eastbound direction.

The driver of the car from the eastbound direction was Michael Spurgeon Sr., 67 of Bardwell. A city official in Bardwell said that Spurgeon was the police chief of the town of Bardwell.

Michael Spurgeon Jr., 40, was a volunteer firefighter for the town of Bardwell; and him and his father were two of the five killed in the crash. The driver of the pickup, Jose Munoz, 31, of Ennis, and two young children in the pickup truck with him all died as well. The two young children were an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy.
