Free Archaeology Family Day at Temple Railroad Museum

Indiana Jones makes it look like nothing but high-speed chases and punching bad guys in the face, but archaeology is fascinating work that helps us discover and understand our shared past. Now, Temple families have a free opportunity to learn how and why archaeologists work to bring history to life.

The Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum invites Central Texas families to their free Archeology Day, this Saturday, August 4th from 11 AM to 1 PM.
Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with real aarchaeologists from the Gault Site and Texas Parks and Wildlife, and see some of the artifacts found right here in Texas.

Families can take part in activities similar to those are ancestors enjoyed, such as throwing an atlatl, creating a ceramic vessel, and drawing a story on a paper “buffalo hide.”

Test your archaeology skills by working and sifting at the museum's “dig pit”. Temple Public Library will also be there with books for anyone interested in finding out more about archaeology.

Barrel train rides will also be offered, dependent on the weather.

“Archeology is one of the main ways we find out about our heritage and the past,” said Museum Director Stephanie Long. "Archaeology Day is a great opportunity for our visitors to learn about the field and people who work as archaeologists.”

The Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum hosts a free Family Day event on the first Saturday of each month. (Regular admission charges apply to view the rest of the museum.)

The museum is located in the Santa Fe Depot at 315 West Avenue B in Downtown Temple. The museum is open 10 AM to 4 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.
