We all know to expect higher temperatures in Central Texas during August. This is a fact of life. When the authorities say there's something to pay attention to, you know it must be serious:

A heat advisory is now in effect through 7:00 pm CDT Monday:

  • High temperatures of 98 to 103 degrees can be expected with heat index values of 105 to 108 degrees.
  • Timing...During the afternoon and early evening hours.
  • Location...Areas along and northeast of a line from graham to Decatur to Waco to Killeen.

Below are what NWS calls precautionary/preparedness actions that need to be taken:

Be sure to check on persons with health problems and the elderly, as they are the most susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Never leave young children or pets in an enclosed vehicle, even for a short time, as temperatures can quickly rise to life-threatening levels.

In addition, take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible. reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting Clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

As I write this, the temperature is 100 degrees outside. The heat is real, please do what it takes to keep cool.  And when the heat advisory doesn't turn off after dark tonight but just keeps going on instead, you know this is a big deal. Be careful!
