A Temple man was fortunate to escape injury after an electric stove sparked a fire in his apartment Tuesday afternoon.

Temple Fire & Rescue units were dispatched to the Kensington Apartments, 400 Fryers Creek Drive, at 4:05 PM after a maintenance worker reported a fire in a downstairs apartment. Whey firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the apartment and were able to quickly locate and extinguish the blaze.

Fortunately, smoke detectors inside the apartment were working and the resident wasn't harmed. However, the apartment received extensive fire, heat, and smoke damage. A dollar loss to the apartment was estimated at $25,000.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by an electric stove burner left on the low. The occupant told an apartment manager he was switching electric service providers and his power was scheduled to be turned on today. No report on why the stove was left on.
