Following other states who have repealed their mandatory vehicle inspection programs, Texas state senators approved Senate Bill 1588, which would drop the current mandate that personal vehicles get yearly safety inspections.

Citizens in 17 counties, including the Houston area, still have to pass emissions tests due to their air quality restrictions.

Texas State Senator Don Huffines says the measure "will save Texans $130 Million paying for a procedure that has proven to have no discernible safety benefit to drivers."

The policy has been effect since 1951 in Texas  despite the federal mandate ending for vehicle inspections in 1976.

If you are wondering how this will affect you the Texas driver?

You are saving a whopping $7 a year!

Hey something is better than nothing.....right?

The SB 1588 is awaiting Texas House approval. We'll see!
