15-year-old Ellison High School student Morgan Doremus remains in critical condition after being hit by a car while crossing a street near the school last Wednesday, and some parents are concerned that the school is not doing enough to ensure students' safety at crossings.

KWTX-TV interviewed parents and students who say they'd like to see crossing guards at the crosswalks adjacent to Ellison. They said heavy traffic on Timmier and Elms road and the school's close proximity to construction areas create a dangerous situation for drivers and students, and that they'd like to see the school do more to protect students.

In a statement, the Killeen Independent School District said it expects all students to use crosswalks and only cross when it's safe to do so, and that police and administrators may issue citations to students crossing illegally.

The statement made no mention of crossing guards.

Morgan Doremus, a sophomore, was struck by a Nissan sedan while crossing in the 3800 block of Trimmier around lunch time Wednesday, August 24. Witnesses said it appeared as if she was talking on her cell phone when she was hit.

Doremus' mother told KWTX the girl is still in a medically-induced coma and experiencing paralysis.
