(Killeen, Texas) - Better bundle up and have a plan in place, because Central Texas is under a Winter Storm Warning, and local meteorologists are warning it could be a doozy.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FOR KILLEEN, TEXAS AREA

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area Monday that's expected to remain in effect until 6AM Wednesday.

Our partners at KWTX-TV report that there could be three waves of freezing rain moving through Central Texas over the next couple of days, with the heaviest accumulation of ice expected along and west of I-135. In fact, there's a 40% chance of seeing at least a half an inch of ice.

KWTX forecasters don't expect snow.

IT'S ABOUT TO GET REALLY COLD HERE IN CENTRAL TEXAS

Temperatures in Killeen and Temple were hovering in the upper 20s Monday afternoon. It looks like we'll stay in the upper 20s and low 30s through the next two days. Unfortunately, the rain is expected to keep falling throughout the week as well.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE PREPARED

We all remember the big ice storm of 2021 that left Texas essentially crippled. Harsh lessons about preparedness and survival were learned that winter.

Make sure you have plenty of food, water, blankets, and emergency supplies on hand to last you several days. That includes food that you can prepare without the use of your oven and microwave, and the means to open it (dig out the manual can opener).

If you have to travel, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to defrost and to get where you're going safely. Crews have been out preparing roads in Central Texas, but never assume they're safe. In fact, there's already been one major bridge closure in Killeen.
