Battle of the Burgers: Who’s on Top Here in Central Texas?
Burgers in Central Texas just can't be discussed without mentioning three names. Whataburger, In-N-Out, and P. Terry's all have their share of loyal fans that are all convinced that their burger joint is the best.
Whataburger: The Texas Legend
Whataburger was founded in Corpus Christi in 1950, and it is probably the most well-known burger joint in all of Texas. People love the big burgers, the spicy ketchup, and being able to eat at three in the morning. It is the type of place that you can order a burger with jalapeños and a side of gravy, and you won't feel any guilt doing it.
In-N-Out: The California Classic
Some people were thrilled when In-N-Out entered the Texas market, and other folks were (rightfully) skeptical. In-N-Out has a limited menu, and they also have a "secret" menu with items like "Animal Style" burgers. Animal Style gets a lot of play, and fans rave about the quality, consistency, and service. Some folks think the burgers are overrated and that fries taste like cardboard that someone left in the sun to warm up. Those people are correct.
P. Terry's: Austin's Best-Burgers!
P. Terry's started in Austin. The chain is still primarily located in Travis County and Williamson Count, but there is one location in San Antonio. Their burgers are made with all-natural beef, and the shoestring fries have delicious flavor and a great crunch every time. The milkshakes are amazing because they are thick, sweet, and made from scratch. It feels like a contemporary and fresh approach to a classic burger joint without losing the nostalgia.
Who Comes Out on Top?
It all depends on what you seek in a burger. Whataburger would bring your tradition, size, and timeliness to the meal. In-N-Out is simple and clean. P. Terry's crafts a quality burger with a melted-in-your-mouth experience.
One thing is for sure, though. If you are in Central Texas, no matter which burger you choose, you are not going to go home hungry.
