Central Texas Buffets: Why We Love (and Fear) Them
There’s something great about an all-you-can-eat buffet, but there is also something ridiculous about it as well. It’s not just a meal, it’s a trip, an experience, and sometimes, a cry for help. Don’t be mistaken though because the buffets are amazing. You pay once, walk in, and suddenly you’re surrounded by fried shrimp, egg rolls, brisket and soft serve.
A World of Flavorful Variety
The variety is massive. You’ve got your go-to favorites like Chinese American comfort food such as sesame chicken, General Tso’s, and lo mein. Of course, there is also the Southern soul food corner with baked mac and cheese, fried catfish, and cornbread that melts in your mouth. Some places go global with sushi, tacos, pasta, and even a little salad bar for those still pretending to care about fiber. It’s basically a culinary world tour for the price of a movie ticket.
Navigating the Downsides: Quality and Crowds
There are some downsides to an all-you-can-eat buffet. They sometimes attract the kind of people who can get their germs past the sneeze guard, and the food quality isn’t always five stars. Let’s just say I doubt the crab legs arrived this morning.
The Inevitable Battle with Overindulgence
Overindulgence is another issue. You feel great until plate three, and suddenly you’re seeing stars that aren’t part of a Yelp review. All you can eat just feels more like a challenge than a policy sometimes.
I will never stop eating at all-you-can-eat buffets. It’s America on a plate. Even with the post-dessert regret, I’ll keep going back.
