Cost of Living in America

The cost of living has skyrocketed over the last 12 months, with everything including rent, gas, food, and just everyday goods costing more and more with no end in sight. Many families are left struggling, and 'getting by' has forced others to find cheaper ways to live.

If you want to stay in Texas, one option to cut back on costs is by relocating to a city that's more affordable within the state. Living here has its challenges for sure, but most of us love it. The politics can get pretty heavy, but overall living satisfaction is high.

Cost of Living in Texas

Outside of the big cities, there are plenty of places to live in Texas that are very affordable. For example, the cost of living in Temple, Belton, and Killeen is very reasonable. However, for those looking to cut back even more, Kiplinger has come up with the four Texas cities that have the lowest cost of living.

Kiplinger based their list on the Council for Community and Economic Research's (C2ER) calculations of living expenses from 267 cities with at least 50,000 inhabitants.

Cheapest Texas Cities to Live In

Coming in at 14th place on their list was Texarkana. Housing in this city is some of the most affordable in the country.

Amarillo lands at fifth place on the list due to its affordable housing as well.

Number three is McAllen, Texas. The cost of living is 23.2% below the national average, but the biggest drawback is the 7.9% unemployment rate. As a result, this city has affordable living, if you can find a job.

At number two on the list, and number one in Texas, is Harlingen. This city has a low cost of living compared to the U.S. average, at 23.4%. However, the unemployment rate in Harlingen is at 6.8%, so employment could be a challenge there as well.

Know Before You Go

One of the best things you can do if you're considering a move is to go on an extended visit before you decide to relocate to any of these places. The cost of living may be low in these cities, but you may face a challenge in finding employment or things to do in the area.
