It's been a crazy year for sure, and now an asteroid is set to pass close to the earth the day before the U.S. election.

According to News 10, NASA says the asteroid is named 2018VP1. It was first spotted in November 2018, and was first identified from Palomar Observatory in San Diego County.

It seems pretty small to me at only about 6.5 feet in diameter. According to NASA's data, the asteroid will come close to earth's atmosphere, but isn't expected to impact the planet.  The chances of that are only 0.41%.  NASA says if it did penetrate the atmosphere, it would disintegrate due to its small size.

This has been a wild year all around, and now an asteroid the day before the election.  Could this be some sort of sign?  I don't know,  but at this point the way 2020 has been going so far anything could happen I guess.

2018VP1 is beyond microscopic on a cosmic scale, and there are much larger objects that pass close to our planet all the time. In fact, Popular Mechanics reports that the closest approach by an asteroid ever recorded already happened earlier this month.

On August 16, near earth object 2020 QG skimmed 1,830 miles above the earth's surface. 2020 QG was about the size of an SUV, and wasn't even spotted until about 6 hours after it almost collided with our atmosphere! Scientists say it would have burned up anyway, but man...imagine the light show.
