Welp, the Grammys have come and gone and once again, "music's biggest night" got "music's biggest award" completely wrong.

While Adele's 25 was a fantastic album and worthy of acclaim, there was little doubt in anyone's mind that Beyonce's groundbreaking, career-defining work, Lemonade, was the album of the year—including Adele's.

Backstage, following her win for Album of Year, Adele continued to wonder why Beyonce didn't pick up the award.

"I spoke to her before just to let her know how honored and privileged I felt to be nominated alongside her, and we spoke afterward as well and she was very gracious and humble, as always, as we've come to expect," Adele told reporters. "And the reason I felt the need to say something is because my album of the year is Lemonade. She is my icon of my whole life."

Adele went on to say that she thought it was Bey's year to win the top prize, an award she's never won.

"I felt like it was her time to win," she said. "What the f--- does she have to do to win album of the year? That's how I feel."

On stage, during her acceptance speech, Adele let it be known what Lemonade (and Beyonce) meant to her as well.

"I can't possibly accept this award," she said during her acceptance speech, before literally breaking the award in half and giving it to Bey. "The Lemonade album was just so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-bearing... we appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light."

Of course, this isn't the first time the Grammys have gotten it totally wrong.

Last year, Kendrick Lamar easily released the best album of the year (and possibly the last five years) in the declarative work, To Pimp A Butterfly, but lost to Taylor Swift's 1989, a loss that Frank Ocean, who has repeatedly said the Grammys are culturally irrelevant and out of date, called out.  He's mostly right.
