Austin, Texas has seen quite the growth over the years in its downtown and skyline, and that has come as the city went from being a modest sized capital city and college town of about a half million people 30 years ago, to almost a million today.

Even as Texas has grown significantly over the years, the skyline stayed very modest with really only the state capitol building and University of Texas buildings standing tall.

About the only thing that has stayed consistent in the downtown Austin area over the last 20 years is the presence of cranes because that town is constantly getting more face lifts than a Hollywood star trying to hang onto their appeal from the 1980s.

Now, one of the most identifiable buildings in the downtown profile is referred to as the Sail Building due to its boat sail like appearance. It is very impressive how much of a signature the building has become even though it is only 3 and a half years old.

The Georgia based Cousins Properties has now under contract to close by the end of the year the building for over a half billion dollars. The entire building is fully leased by Google at this time, and Cousins Properties own about 17 million total square feet of office space in downtown Austin according to this KVUE article.

Downtown is not the only place Cousins owns a large chunk of Austin

The Domain is another major commercial area, and Cousins owns about 2.5 million square feet there.

New Austin Super Tower Will Be The Tallest Building in Texas by 20 Feet

Currently, the title of the tallest building in Austin goes to The Independent, and the tallest in the state is the JPMorgan Chase Tower in downtown Houston.

This new structure will better those by 300 feet and 20 feet respectively -- and bring the title of "Texas' Tallest Building" to the Capital of the Lone Star State.
