Countless Texans have been hard hit by the ongoing pandemic and its economic impact, but at least one form of relief looks to be on the way for Central Texans.

On Monday, the Bell County Commissioners unanimously approved a program to give hope to local renters who may be facing eviction due to back rent.

The partnership between Bell County commissioners and Hill Country Community Action approved a program dispersing almost $11 million in federal funds for rentals here in Central Texas.

According to the Killeen Daily Herald, the money is coming from the U.S. Department of Treasury and will need to be distributed by September.

To apply, you must prove that you are at risk of being homeless or living currently in unhealthy living conditions. You also must prove that one or more household members are unemployed or experienced reduced income during the pandemic.

If you are at or below 80% of Bell County‘s median income of $63,900 for a family of four, you will probably be eligible, but priority will be given to those making below 50% of the median family income. The company will be working with groups to identify those most in need and will also cover past due utilities dated after March 13, 2020.

On Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that a statewide occupancy limit on businesses will end on March 10. That could mean more work for Texans and more relief from the financial woes caused by COVID-19. Time will tell.
