During these trying times of recession, COVID-19, and monkeypox, a lot of people in the Killeen, Texas area have been keeping to themselves in recent years, which can make anyone all types of depressed.

A lot of people during this time have gotten really lonely, whether it's due to work, quarantine, or just the state of society in general. What I’ve learned speaking to a certain specialist is that a companion is probably needed more than ever before in these trying days. The Killeen Animal Shelter definitely answered our prayers when it comes to looking for a great companion.

From August 1 until August 8, the Killeen Animal Shelter is celebrating International Cat Day with a free pet adoption event. During this week, they'll be waiving the usual adoption fees. (There may still be fees for vaccinations and whatnot, so just be aware.)

That's great news for anyone who's got an empty place in their heart and needs a friendly dog or cat to fill it.

A lot of people that are not pet owners don’t understand why it’s so important to own a fur baby. Being a person who loves animals more than most people, I have truly learned and understood the value of what animals actually do to lift our spirits. They can be loyal and loving companions and provide endless entertainment. You can be in some of the darkest places in your life an animal will be there with you every step of the way. It lessens depression, and some animals can even help you with your anxiety, I know my dog does.

If you’re in need of a new friend to love, be at the Killeen Animal Shelter located at 3118 Commerce Dr., Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM or on Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM. These pets are ready for a new home.

You can also view your new best friend at KilleenTexas.gov/Animals or call the shelter at 254-526-4455.
