Central Texas Listeners Debate Who Should Battle Stevie Wonder In A Versuz
We should all be familiar with what a Versuz battle is, right?
If not, here's a quick refresher.
In March 2020 during the pandemic, producers Swizz Beats and Timbaland went on Instagram one night and went back and forth playing hits they've both produced over the years.
After the success of that initial session on Instagram, somebody came up with the idea of making it a live event, and the concept of two artists or producers playing their hits while hundreds of thousands of people watched became a pop culture phenomenon.
Versuz Battles Got Bigger
After the initial Versuz between Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, they obtained national sponsors, and by the time it was ok for people to "come back outside" (because of COVID-19) the two producers sold it to Triller.
Now Versuz battles are being held in theaters, with big-name artists of different genres.
Artists Featured In Versuz Battles In The Past
In the past year and a half, we have seen Versuz battles from:
Babyface vs. Teddy Riley:
Erykah Badu vs. Jill Scott:
Patti Labelle vs. Gladys Knight:
Brandy vs. Monica
Chaka Khan vs. Stephanie Mills
Just to name a few, and just this past weekend on Easter Sunday, a special gospel event featuring Bebe and Cece Winans vs Mary Mary.
And Then Today, It Happened...
Who would Stevie Wonder battle in a Versuz? Before I answer that...
Let's Take A Small Stevie Break
I honestly think the only person who would have a fighting chance at even holding a candle to Stevie Wonder is Robert Sylvester Kelly, and we all know where he's at these days.
Some people suggest Smokey Robinson, others say Al Green, I say R. Kelly.
