I hate taking a microscope over my everyday products mostly because once I'm aware of something new I learn, I feel like I have an obligation to myself to make better choices.

I recently decided to take a look at something I battle with all the time--my hair. If there is one thing I am bad about it's not spending enough time on it and taking care of it like I should.

So I started to read up on what I should be doing for my hair and what I shouldn't be doing. Oh boy, did I learn a lot. I am basically worse for my hair than Chris Brown is for Rhianna.

List of my wrongs....

I buy really cheap shampoo and conditioner. That may save a few pennies, but, some shampoos contain harsh and maybe damaging chemicals, such as:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • TEA Lauryl Sulfate
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
  • Ammonium Xylene Sulfonate
  • Selenium Sulfide and Sulfur (for Dandruff shampoos)

Great. Pretty much all of my hair products have those big words in them.

Also, I love hot baths and showers.  On top of that I blast the hairdryer on high heat, in my hurry to get ready in the morning. (The snooze alarm is not my friend.)  Not good. Your hair shouldn't be under that kind of stressful heat. If you want to be really good to your hair, use warm water in the shower and always use cool setting on your dryer.

With all these choices and tips and warnings, my head was swimming. So I asked the one person I know is always right about everything - my dad.

Perhaps not the best idea to ask 53-year-old grandfather if I should be buying premium hair care products.  I know most men don't care about what they stick on their head but my Dad takes it to the extreme. Here what he uses when he runs out of soap!

Ultimately, there's one thing I learned. Pricier doesn't always mean better In the end it actually doesn't matter what brand or price it is, it just depends on what is in the product. And the easiest way to find that out is just by looking at the back of the label!
