Does the Ring Really Mean a Thing?

Over the weekend me and a girlfriend were having a conversation about engagement and marriage. The question was asked, "Could you accept a proposal with no ring?"

Me, personally, I could, but I want to know what you think. Also, fellas if you wanted to spend the rest of your life with a lady but didn't have the money to purchase a ring, would you still ask?
