Expansion Underway for Oldest BBQ Restaurant in Texas
Southside Market & Barbeque is looking to expand its business. Word on the street is that the restaurant applied for a wine and beer permit with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for the Shops at Arbor Walk, in the North Burnet neighborhood, located at 10515 North Mopac Expressway.
Legend has it that Southside Market & Barbeque originally began in 1882 with the creator, William Moon, who sold fresh meat door-to-door by wagon. In 1886, Moon established a small store and ran the business until 1908.
After the business changed hands a few times, Ernest Bracewell Sr and his wife Adrene bought the market in 1968. Eventually, in 1961, Ernest Sr decided to move the shop from 109 Central to 1212 Hwy. 290. Since then Southside Market & Barbeque has stayed in the Bracewell family and also opened a second location in Bastrop.
Southside Market & Barbeque is most famous for their "hot gut" sausage; they offer a wide variety such as beef, hot beef, jalapeno cheddar, garlic and various others. The market also offers all the classics like brisket, turkey, ribs, and more.
