Florida Grandma Arrested for Slapping Lazy Granddaughter with Slipper
Here in Texas, pissing off grandma can get you a smack upside the head with the dreaded chancla. In Florida, that can get grandma arrested for domestic violence.
According to KOAT-TV, it happened to 95-year-old Hattie Reynolds of Daytona Beach earlier this week.
Hattie told police her 45-year-old granddaughter, Janeen Williams, had been lying in her bed all day "soaking up the air conditioning". She smacked her lazy granddaughter in the face with her slipper, then called police for help getting the woman out of the house.
When police arrived and learned that Hattie had whapped her granddaughter, they took her into custody.
To her credit, Janeen told police she didn't want to press charges. However, Florida has strict domestic violence laws, and officers decided to take Hattie in.
Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri told the Daytona Beach News-Journal, "“Under the law domestic violence is a very serious offense and officers’ hands are tied. Discretion is taken away from them by the law.”
However, a former defense attorney told the News-Journal that the arrest probably wasn't necessary, and that a complaint should have been forwarded to the State Attorney General's Office.
Hattie spent a night in jail and was released the next day on her own recognizance, KOAT reported.
I don't know about you, but if I was a cop and my mom heard about me arresting Hattie in this case, she'd probably smack in the face too.
