Those of us in Texas have our very own forecaster of spring and our very own Armadillo Day on February 2 to compete with Groundhog Day in Pennsylvania.

"Punxsutawney Phil" and his ancestors have been predicting spring since the 1800s but for the 14th year, "Bee Cave Bob" has been predicting whether we in Texas are going to have six more weeks of winter or see an early spring.

There was one year it was canceled due to the pandemic and that was in 2021, but other than that "Bee Cave Bob" has been doing his thing and predicting when spring would get to Texas.

Bob has predicted an early spring for the last five years, while Phil has predicted an extended winter in three of the last five years.

Also, Phil and Bob have agreed about the weather twice in the last five years.

"Armadillo Day" as it is known in Bee Cave, Texas is getting more popular every year with a barbecue dinner or chili to start things off, and then Bob the Armadillo is released, and just like Punxsutawney Phil, if Bob sees his shadow it is six more weeks of winter and if he doesn't see his shadow it is going to be an early spring.

We will have to wait and see what happens later today but the forecast in the Austin area calls for cloudy skies so it looks like it will be an early spring prediction for Bob.

That sounds like the perfect forecast after the winter weather we have been seeing all week, an early spring is always a welcome thing after a week of below-average temperatures.
