Killeen's signature dog event is back this year, but just like everything else, they are adapting to the current climate while still providing fun for our furry friends.

Barktoberfest is scheduled for October 10th, and while it is still free and open to the public, there's going to be a change of venue and new activities including a "virtual" Pooch Paegeant.

The Pooch Pageant will feature multiple categories like best costume, twins, ugliest, smallest, and hairiest dog, with voting taking place online. You can enter your pooch in one or multiple categories. To enter, submit photos by October 5 to yvalderrama-santana@killeentexas.gov. Winners will be announced October 10.

One cool new activity this year will be the virtual fun run/walk at the Andy K. Wells Hike & Bike Trail. All participants will complete the same course, but can run or walk it at any time between October 3 and 11.

Participants must compete as a team with a dog or dogs. If one doesn’t have a dog, dogs will be available to borrow from the Killeen Animal Shelter. Registration is free, and should be completed for each four-legged racer in order to receive a race bag and door prize entries.

Finally, the in-person Barktoberfest will happen at the Killeen Animal Shelter on October 10th from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There'll be fun for everyone, including a photo booth, play areas, and door prizes. The Shelter will also be offering pets for adoption and accepting donations.
