Texans Lead the Way in This Life Changing Gesture for Kids
November is National Adoption Month: Texas Among Top States for Adoptions
November marks National Adoption Month, a time to celebrate the lives transformed by adoption and to recognize the incredible families who open their hearts to children in need. For the last three years, Texas has proudly ranked among the top three states for child adoptions, a testament to our state’s strong commitment to finding permanent, loving homes for children.
In 2022 alone, Texas saw over 5,600 adoptions from foster care. These numbers reflect more than just a statistic, they represent thousands of stories of hope, resilience, and new beginnings for children who have been through incredibly difficult circumstances. The majority of these adoptions involved children under the age of six, many of them sibling groups who were able to stay together thanks to the compassion of big hearted Texas families.
A Personal Connection to Adoption
Texas continues to lead the way in making sure that more and more children are given a chance to grow up in stable, nurturing environments. Stories of adoption hit close to home for me, because while I've known who my biological mother was, there’s still a part of my history that remains a mystery, my biological father. Like most all adoptees, I’m curious to learn more about my father's' medical history, not just for personal understanding, but to know what health issues I might face in the future, if any.
Many adoptees have turned to DNA testing websites in hopes of reconnecting with their biological roots. With over 5 million adoptees in the U.S., these platforms have become a bridge for people looking for answers about their genetic background. For those of us who have experienced adoption firsthand, it’s about more than just names on a family tree, it’s about understanding who we are and where we come from.
The Foster Care Side of the Story
As we celebrate adoption in Texas, we can’t forget about the thousands of children still waiting in the foster care system. These kids deserve a shot at a bright future, and fostering often serves as the first step toward adoption. The question remains: how many of these children are getting adopted? And what more can we do to ensure every child in Texas has the chance to grow up in a permanent, loving family?
Texans have shown time and again that we are a state full of big hearts and open arms. Let’s continue that legacy, not just this month, but every month, by supporting adoption and foster care initiatives that ensure no child is left behind.
