Shocking Study Claims Most Teachers in Texas Wanted To Quit Last Year
For the last few years Texas has seen a teacher shortage that has resulted in larger classroom sizes, 4-day school weeks, and the hiring of new teachers who don't have teacher certificates yet. But the problem could be worse. Much worse according to a new poll that was release this week.
According to WFAA, the Texas State Teachers Association surveyed over 800 of its members during the last school year and found a shocking result. Most teachers wanted to quit their jobs. Not just most, but an overwhelming number wanted to quit.
65% of Texas Teachers Wanted To Quit Their Job
The Texas State Teachers Association found that 65% of Texas Teachers really thought about quitting last year.
The study also found that 87% of Texas teachers didn't think state lawmakers had a positive opinion of them. 33% of teachers surveyed said they took a second job during the school year.
According to WFAA, surveys over the last couple of years show the highest percentage of teachers who have been wanting to quit.
Just over half of respondents, 57%, did not think the public has a positive opinion of teachers.
Sam Houston State University has been gauging the sentiments of Texas teachers for 40 years, the release states. Surveys in 2022 and 2023 found the highest-ever percentage of teachers seriously considering leaving education for other jobs, according to the association.
Past studies have also pointed to lack of discipline in the classroom as a reason why teachers are thinking about quitting.
The survey conducted by the Texas State Teachers Association is conducted every two years.
