Changes may be coming soon here in the great state, according to CBS News. The Central Texas military post that was renamed two years ago as Fort Cavazos could soon return to its original name, Fort Hood. On Tuesday, Donald Trump announced that he intends to restore the original names of several military bases that were changed during the Biden administration. Speaking from Fort Bragg ahead of the U.S. Army's 250th birthday celebration, Trump said, “We won a lot of battles out of those forts. It’s no time to change.”

Fort Hood's Future: Trump's Decision Reignites Historic Name Debate

As someone born in Fort Hood Hospital—Darnell, to be exact—and a native of Killeen, I feel confident that I speak for many others in the community when it comes to renaming the base. Please don’t misunderstand me: General Richard Cavazos was an outstanding military leader who served our country with honor. He was the first Hispanic four-star general, and he deserves to be celebrated for that achievement. But the reality is, Fort Hood has been Fort Hood for generations. Yes, it was named after General John Bell Hood, a Confederate general—a fact many find offensive and rightly so. Still, for many of us, the name "Fort Hood" is tied more to our identity, memories, and community than to its historical namesake. That’s what we’ve always known it as, and most people I talk to still refuse to call it Fort Cavazos.

I don't believe my opinion makes or breaks the value of the military base. Yes, naming a base after a Confederate general is problematic and offensive to many. But changing the name didn’t affect Texans in the way the Biden administration may have anticipated. It didn’t stop protests, racism, or violence—it was just a name change.
When I speak to residents, their stance on the renaming is pretty consistent: “Change it if you want, or don’t. Either way, we’re going to keep calling Fort Cavazos ‘Fort Hood.’” And honestly, if the deeper issues in our community haven’t been addressed, what’s the point of focusing so much on a name?
