Killeen’s Growing Residency Reaches Record Highs

When the Texas Demographic Center reviewed historic building permit records, along with updated information provided by the City of Killeen, an email was issued stating that it appears unlikely the city experienced a population decline between 2023 and 2025. The email went on to say, “We will incorporate the supplemental building permit data into the production of our next population estimate vintage, and we anticipate the updated figures will reflect a substantial increase in Killeen’s 2025 population.”

By the Numbers: How Killeen Added 1,300+ Housing Units Since 2024

It’s important to note that last year the population was estimated at approximately 164,000 to 167,000. However, the U.S. Census Bureau reports the population was actually 160,160 as of July 2024, with an average of 2.6 persons per household. Since 2024, the city has added a net total of 1,307 housing units, including 778 single-family homes, 539 multifamily units, and 10 demolished units. Wallis Meshier, Executive Director of Development Services, stated that the growth seen in Killeen is a testament to continued development and investment in the city. Meshier went on to say that from new single-family homes to multifamily projects, the city has expanded responsibly, and these numbers reflect Killeen’s resilience. He added that the city remains committed to ensuring residents and stakeholders have access to accurate, up-to-date information about the community.
