
Man Sentenced in Bell County Deputy Murder Case
Manuel Oscar Ramirez Jr. met his fate today when he was sentenced by a District Judge in the 264th Judicial District Court on Friday. According to Fox 44, the Texas man was accused of murdering a Bell County deputy. As a result of his actions, he has now been sentenced to 40 years in prison for murder, with an additional 10 years for a separate charge of arson.

Man Gets 40-Year Sentence for Bell Co. Deputy's Death
The murder charge stems from the death of Deputy John Andrew Rhoden, which occurred on April 26, 2020. The arson charge was added later, relating to an incident that took place while Ramirez was in custody at the Bell County Jail on November 8, 2024.Ramirez was found guilty on both counts. Judge Lepak issued the sentence—40 years for the murder and 10 years for arson—following a plea agreement.
Bell County Sheriff Bill Cooke stated that Ramirez’s sentencing brings a measure of closure to a painful chapter in the department's history. He went on to say that Deputy Rhoden’s absence is still deeply felt by his family, friends, and fellow law enforcement officers.
Bell County Deputy Murder: 40-Year Sentence Issued
Deputy Rhoden lost his life after being struck and killed by an 18-wheeler while attempting to deploy spike strips near Exit 294 on northbound Interstate 35. His patrol car has since been placed on the sidewalk beneath the Texas and U.S. flags in front of the Bell County Sheriff’s Department. What once stood as a solemn reminder of loss may now also serve as a symbol of justice finally being served.
