From Rails to Roads: The Freedom 250 Tour Rolls into Fort Hood

As the United States prepares to celebrate its milestone 250th birthday, a high-tech tribute to American independence is making a stop in Central Texas. Starting this week, the Freedom Truck American Tour will arrive at Fort Hood’s National Mounted Warrior Museum, bringing six mobile exhibits to the public from Wednesday, March 18 through Saturday March 21.

A Modern Take on a Historic Tradition

The Freedom Truck tour is a key part of the national Freedom 250 initiative. Much like the legendary American Freedom Train of the 1970s, this mobile museum is designed to bring history directly to the people.  I remember my parents taking us kids to see the Freedom Train when it went through Baton Rouge. I was too young to grasp what I was looking at, but I remember it making an impact on my parents. While the original 26-car steam train carried over 500 American treasures, ranging from George Washington’s copy of the Constitution to a moon rock and Judy Garland’s dress, the 2026 truck tour utilizes 21st-century technology to tell the story of our nation's founding.

The Story of Sovereignty: Traces the journey of the original 13 colonies as they gained independence from the British Crown.

Honoring the Military Connection

The choice of Fort Hood as a host site makes sense due to the connection between our nation’s founding and our military. Brig. Gen. Geoff Van Epps, III Armored Corps Deputy Commanding General told KCEN, "Understanding our nation's heritage is foundational to military service. The Freedom Truck exhibit offers a direct connection to that history."Epps also encouraged visitors to explore the National Mounted Warrior Museum alongside the trucks that "chronicles our own vital chapter in the American story."
