Texas’ New Number One: How Killeen-Temple Became a National Hotspot
Everyone seems to be moving to Texas, but if you are a millenial, Killeen-Temple is the place seeing the largest growth.
The New Millennial Mecca: Why Central Texas is 2026’s Top Migration Hub
For years, Texas growth centered on the high-tech hub of Austin or the sprawling suburbs of Dallas. That is no longer the case. According to a recent study by HireAHelper.com titled "2026 Millennial Migration: Where the Largest Generation Is Headed Now," the Lone Star State has officially become the premier destination for the millennial generation.
Texas Takes the Crown
Out of the 15 million moves tracked across the United States in 2025, Texas emerged as the undisputed heavyweight champion. The state gained a net total of 16,530 millennials which is more than double the growth of any other state in the nation. On a per capita basis, Texas now ranks No. 6, welcoming roughly 56 millennials for every 10,000 residents.
The Rise of the Killeen-Temple Metro
While the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area continues to draw crowds, it was eclipsed in the rankings by a neighboring region. The Killeen-Temple metropolitan area (which includes Belton) claimed the honor of Texas' most popular millennial destination, ranking No. 15 nationally. This metro gained 35.2 millennials per 10,000 residents, outperforming the Austin metro rank of No. 21.
Are We Surprised by This News?
I personally am not surprised by this news. Located between Waco and Austin along the I-35 corridor, the Killeen-Temple area offers a unique blend of military tradition, natural beauty, and modern convenience. Killeen’s Fort Hood serves as an anchor for the region, while Temple and Belton provide a mix of healthcare hubs and lakeside living.
What’s Drawing Them In?
The appeal of this "military city metro" goes beyond the job market. Residents enjoy immediate access to outdoor recreation at Stillhouse Hollow Lake and Belton Lake. The area boasts legendary barbecue destinations like Johnny’s Steaks in Salado, Miller's Smokehouse, Schoepf's BBQ, seven H-E-B grocery stores, and a massive Buc-ee's in North Temple. For millennials looking to escape the skyrocketing costs of Austin while staying within its orbit, our neck of the woods is proving to be the perfect landing spot.
