Rocket Fire, House Fails: 76 Central Texas Homeowners Sue SpaceX for Property Damage
Space X is being sued by Central Texas homeowners in McLennan and Coryell counites who say when it comes to damage to their property, X marks the spot.
McGregor Residents Take Legal Action Over SpaceX Testing Vibrations
This lawsuit does not come as a surprise to me. I live about 60 miles from the Space X Rocket Testing Facility in McGregor, and my windows rattle when the facility fires up rockets. I’ve often wondered how people who live in the same town deal with the noise and vibration. Evidently, they don’t.
Over One Million Dollars in Damages
On April 30, a group of 76 homeowners from McLennan and Coryell counties formally filed a lawsuit against Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) in 414th District Court. According to KCEN, the plaintiffs, from McGregor, Moody, Oglesby, and Crawford, are seeking damages in excess of $1 million, arguing the company’s rocket engine testing has damaged their homes.
"Static Fire" Tests
At the heart of the dispute is SpaceX’s 4,000-acre testing and manufacturing facility in McGregor. Unlike an all-out launch, this site is used for "static fire" operations, where massive engines are tied to the ground and ignited. The lawsuit contends that these tests generate immense acoustic pressure and seismic energy.
The Tests Impact
With some engines producing upwards of 600,000 pounds of thrust, residents claim the resulting vibrations have led to:
Foundation failures and shifting home structures.
Shattered glass in windows and doors.
Cracked walls and interior damage.
Escalating Frequency and Frustration
According to the legal filing, the intensity of the disruption has grown alongside SpaceX's launch schedule. The petition notes that testing is now a near-daily occurrence, with some weeks seeing more than 20 separate burns. In some instances, multiple tests occur within a single day, lasting several minutes each.
An Ongoing Issue
Homeowners argue that SpaceX has been aware of these issues for years through a steady stream of formal complaints and repair requests. Despite this awareness, the plaintiffs allege that the aerospace giant failed to respond in a desired manner. The legal action is not new to Space X. The company was the focus of a lawsuit in 2023 from a China Spring resident seeking over $250,000 for structural harm.
A Battle for Quality of Life
The legal team representing the residents says persistent testing constitutes a continuous nuisance that has lowered property values. The outcome of this jury trial could set a major precedent for how private space companies interact with the communities located near their ground operations.
