Is Alcohol, Real Booze, Coming To A Texas Store Near You?
We're not talking beer and wine here, most Texas grocery, convenience and "Mom 'N Pop" shops already have that covered. We're talking mixed drinks here ...
Our neighbor to the north, New Mexico and several other states allow the sale of alcohol ... all types ... at any establishment properly licensed to sell it. Texas however, splits the pack into to 2 categories: beer and wine only or everything.
That line may be about to get blurry.
A new law allowing grocery stores to sell "ready to drink" cocktails has passed in committee and is now headed for the Senate. If it passes there, the Texas House of Representatives gets it and, if they pass it, it becomes law.
Two "sister bills", Senate Bill 2225 and House Bill 4077, were introduced in March that would get rid of laws that prohibit selling ready-to-drink, spirits-based drinks ... pre-mixed whiskey and coke, vodka and juice(s), Ranchwaters, etc ... in locations where beer and wine beverages are already sold.
According to KHOU, 86% of consumers surveyed are in favor of this. Hopefully, it leads to all stores being able to sell all booze. It's a pain making several stops to gather your groups preferences. The grocery store for good beer deals, the convenience store for Buzzballz and such and then a liquor store for liquor or a "ready to drink". Weird, right?
New Mexico and many other states already have the right idea by allowing all liquor license holders the right to sell ALL alcohol products. What's wrong with one stop shopping?
You can get soda, juice and water in the same place, right?
