Killeen ISD Student Arrested as Second Suspect in Austin Shooting
A 17-year-old student enrolled in a summer school course at Harker Heights High School was arrested Monday in connection to a weekend shooting in Austin that left over a dozen people injured and one man dead.
In an email update, the Austin Police Department confirmed Monday afternoon that APD worked with the Killeen ISD Police Department to take Jeremiah Roshaun Leland James Tabb into custody for aggravated assault.
Police said the arrest was made without incident while Tabb was attending class.
Killeen ISD issued this brief statement after the arrest:
The Killeen Independent School District and Killeen ISD Police Department are diligently working with the Austin Police Department to assist in an ongoing investigation. As part of a joint effort, KISD Police arrested a 17-year-old male at Harker Heights High School earlier today. Killeen ISD will continue to assist law enforcement agencies to bring justice to the tragic events as quickly as possible.
A juvenile suspect was taken into custody over the weekend. Due to their age, police did not release that suspect's name.
The shooting happened shortly before 1:24 AM Saturday, June 12 in the 400 Block of the East 6th Street entertainment district in Downtown Austin. 14 people were injured, including 25-year-old Douglas John Kantor was visiting town from Michigan. Kantor died Sunday as a result of a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Police believe most of those injured were innocent bystanders.
The news that the second suspect in this case is a Killeen ISD student hurts my heart and instantly makes me think of March of 2014, when Rashad Charjuan Owens of Killeen drove his car through a crowd at the South by Southwest Music Festival. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2015.
