The Killeen Animal Shelter is once again waiving adoption fees for an entire weekend in hopes of finding safe, loving homes for pets in need.

Full House

Hilary J. Shine with the City of Killeen tells us the shelter has been near its capacity for weeks. They're looking for kind hearted people who are interested in either adopting a dog or cat, or taking an animal in to foster until they can find a forever home.

Waive Adoption Fees Goodbye

This Saturday and Sunday, July 10 and 11, the Killeen Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees for animals who have been sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped. Standard adoption rates will still apply to other animals who haven't yet had these procedures.

Shelter Animals Make the Best Pets

I've said it before, but I can't say enough - shelter pets make for wonderful friends and additions to your family.

My mom and I adopted Leela from the Temple Animal Shelter back in 2016. She was a teeny, tiny thing, a total runt, but thanks to plenty of love (and treats) she's now my big chonky girl.

Here she is trying to make friends with a squirrel at Miller Park.

She's so full of love and energy, and has helped me in me so many ways. She helps pick me up when I feel depressed, she gives me a perfect excuse to get outdoors and explore the beautiful parks in Central Texas, and she's a fantastic buddy for leisurely drives. I never get tired of watching her stick her head out of the window and letting the wind make her face look all derpy.

Make Sure You're Ready

I need to emphasize that a pet is a commitment. They're going to be relying on you for companionship just as much as you rely on them, and they'll need so much of your love and attention. They'll also need medical care if they get sick or, heaven forbid, hurt.

So, before you make the decision to adopt, just make sure you can be as good a friend to your new pet as they want to be to you.

Unconditional Love

I can tell you from experience that a shelter pet will love and appreciate you like no one else.
