This will be a somber week for music fans. On Friday (April 21), it will be the one-year anniversary of Prince’s untimely death. There will be a lot of celebrations this week, including a tribute concert at Paisley Park in Minneapolis.

However, the celebration has been dampened by recent news. New court documents have surfaced and they revealed that opioid painkillers were discovered hidden throughout Prince’s Paisley Park estate days after his death in April 2016, according to CNN.

The documents, which were released on Monday (April 17), revealed that investigators found several white pills labeled “Watson 853” (hydrocodone-acetaminophen) in various bottles inside the Purple One’s home. They also found Ziploc bags and envelopes containing medication.

In addition, witnesses have told investigators that the late music icon “recently had a history of going through withdrawals which are believed to be the result of abuse of prescription medication."

The court papers also revealed that a bodyguard filled out Prince’s prescriptions, which included Percocet, at a local Walgreens pharmacy a day before the late guitarist’s death.

As we previously reported, the Minnesota Medical Examiner’s Office said that Prince died from an accidental drug overdose of Fentanyl, which is more powerful than Percocet. The toxicology report shows that Fentanyl was found in his system and that there were no other significant conditions that led to his death.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune quoted a source with knowledge of the investigation as saying that pills seized inside the compound by investigators were labeled as hydrocodone but actually contained fentanyl.

No one has been charged in connection with Prince's death, but authorities said that it's still an open and active investigation. The circumstances that led up to his death still remain a mystery.

This news comes at a very inopportune time as Prince fans are planning to honor the musical legacy of the singer-guitarist. Some people have accused CNN of being insensitive with their news report. Read some of the tweets below.
