This is Leela. She's currently on a diet because I spoiled her with chicken nuggets and treats as a puppy.

She and I play fetch in the backyard and go on hikes, and while exercise is important, it's also important to know what you're feeding your furrever friend to keep them healthy.

This weekend, Petco will help you do that.

It's all part of the company's efforts to take a stand against foods and treats that contain artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.

"We know choosing between so many pet food options can be a confusing and daunting task," Petco Co-Chief Merchandising Officer, Nick Konat, wrote in a media release.

"We stopped selling foods with artificial ingredients because we believe it's the right thing to do, and we want to make decisions easier for pet parents. The Artificial-Free Upgrade event is a great opportunity for pet parents to learn about our new nutrition standards, how these standards can help address their pet's needs, and how pet parents can make this important change with us. We're proud to make the transition accessible to all pet parents in the spirit of better health and wellness for our four-legged family members."

I feed Leela and my cat, Libby, foods that bill themselves as healthy, but I plan to take the bags in this weekend just in case.

In the meantime, Leela continues to crave grilled nuggies from Chick-Fil-A. When she gives me that cute, hungry puppy look as if she hasn't eaten in days, it's difficult to say no, but to keep her healthy (and avoid getting dirty looks from her vet again), I'll stick to the wholesome stuff. Sorry, Leela.
