In life, everything can change in an instant. One moment you're trying to help save someone's life, and the next you're in the hospital fighting for yours.

At approximately 2 PM Friday, October 11, Riesel Police Chief Danny Krumnow and Falls County Deputy Matt Jones were trying to help a citizen involved in a single-car crash at Highway 6 and County Road 109 near Riesel when another car hydroplaned and hit the two officers.

Sadly, Deputy Jones' injuries were fatal. Our partners at News 10 report that Chief Krumnow's injuries were severe, and included a lacerated spleen.

It takes a great deal of grit and determination to be a police officer, and Chief Krumnow is reportedly demonstrating both as he fights to recover at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Waco PD Sergeant W. Patrick Swanton issued an update on Chief Krumnow's condition Monday afternoon:

Update on Chief Krumnow

Afternoon All,

Chief Krumnow is having a rough go of it today. We ask you to continue to keep Danny, his family, and friends in your prayers.

The medical staff has advised the family he is looking at multiple surgeries. However, Danny must wait for some of those surgeries until he regains some strength.

Danny…We are wishing you the best of thoughts and look forward to more of your Facebook hunting videos once you are up and at the hogs again!!

Heal well my brother!

Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton

The Heart of Texas Chapter of the 100 Club has set up a fundraiser to help the families of both Chief Krumnow and Deputy Jones.

Donations are being accepted online at 100clubhot.com. Click or tap the Donate button at the top right of the screen. You'll be asked if you wish to donate to Chief's Krumnow's fund, Jones' fund, or both.

An account is being set up at the First National Bank of Central Texas. We'll bring you those details once they're available. (The account couldn't be set up Monday, as it was a banking holiday.)

The Heart of Texas 100 Club is a non-profit that uses all funds raised to pay for the funeral expenses of fallen first responders and help their families with other expenses, including education.

If you can spare any amount, you can rest assured it's going to a worthy cause and honoring the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day.

Chief Krumnow was trying to protect and preserve a life when his was changed forever. Now it's time for us to step up to help protect and preserve his life while ensuring Deputy Jones' family can mourn him without having to worry about funeral expenses.
