The most common belief is that the stars made their way to homes and structures as thousands of German and Dutch immigrants made their way into Central Texas and Hill Country. Immediately following the end of the Civil War, around 40,000 new immigrants made their way to join the previous wave that had already established communities like Fredrickburg and Gruene.

Sometimes the stars are meant just to be patriotic, but often the placement of the stars was also a personal touch of style, and the home owners wanted nothing more than to express their heritage in a way they thought looked good.
