Texas is full of wide open space, but as a society we are always huddling together in one small area or another which is what makes it so easy for viruses and illness to spread in a very short amount of time. Texas also seems to have a way of repeating itself from one year to the next because it was right about this time last year that schools were battling the influenza bug, and struggling to keep open.

Just earlier this week, my wife and I had to attend our son's IEP meeting and when walking up to the front door, one of the district's employees was heading towards a work truck and said he swore every kid inside was either coughing nonstop, or had a runny nose.

For much of Texas, students are coming off a short week due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and then severe weather that passed through the Lone Star State. Now, entire school districts are closing, and students are told to stay home through the weekend to rest up and get well.

Influenza A is particularly harsh this winter, and there is a good chance based on previous years that the peak of flu season is still ahead of us. Remember, if you're feeling under the weather stay home, and if you have had a fever, make sure you wait a full 24 hours after the fever to pass before going around other people.
