Things to Look Forward to in May
We're a day away from the month of May,. Here are a few things to look forward to.
Wow, May already. Where did the last four months go?
As we enter the fifth month of the year, I found some interesting facts about the month of May courtesy of #Fact Site . . .
Fact 1, May is known as the month of transition. Ever heard the saying, "April showers bring May flowers?" May is known as a time of change. We see flowers blooming, more birds chirping and warmer temperatures. On the other side of the world, May brings colder, darker nights.
Fact 2, May use to be referred to as the “month of three milkings" in Old English. Meaning you could milk your cow three times in a day.
Fact 3, ever see the movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams? Personally I loved the movie, but Eurovision is actually a real event and it happens in May. ABBA won the Eurovision contest representing Sweden in 1974 with their song "Waterloo." Betcha didn't know that.
Fact 4, The Empire State Building opened its doors on May 1, 1931. It was the tallest building in the world at the time.
Fact 5, here in the US, May is National Burger Month and I plan to celebrate accordingly. 31 days of burgers. Who's with me?
There are plenty of other interesting facts about May, but let's look at some other things to look forward to in May, starting with sporting events.
The 147th running of the Kentucky Derby, also known as "The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports", is set for tomorrow from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The actual race will kick off at approximately 5:57p.m. Essential Quality is the betting favorite right now at 2-1, but if you’re looking for the longshot, several horses are at 50-1 right now with Hidden Stash being my favorite.
The NBA Playoffs are scheduled to begin May 22nd, the NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs are starting around May 20th, and the Indianapolis 500 is coming up on May 30th.
For the couch potatoes, myself included, there're plenty of reasons to watch the tube in May. There's the premiere of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" on Disney+ and Season 2 of "Selena: The Series" on Netflix, both on May 4th, and the "Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World" special will air on May 8th.
There's also the "MTV Movie & TV Awards" on May 16th and the "Billboard Music Awards" on May 23rd.
Don't forget about Tax Day on May 17th. It was pushed back a month due to the pandemic, so if you haven't done your taxes yet, it's time to start thinking about doing so.
Finally, the holidays. The big ones are Cinco de Mayo next Wednesday, May 5th, Mother's Day on Sunday the 9th and Memorial Day on the 31st.
There's also Star Wars Day on May the 4th, National No Pants Day on the 7th, National Pizza Party Day on the 21st, National Talk Like Yoda Day also on the 21st and National Wine Day on the 25th.
Happy May everybody!
