Belton will be home to a new $125 million comprehensive high school by fall of 2020, and district officials are seeking public input on on the name, colors, and mascot of the new facility.

Belton ISD Superintendent Susan Kincannon issued the following email Thursday afternoon:

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As we prepare to open Belton ISD’s second comprehensive high school in the fall of 2020, we want to hear from you.

Next Monday (August 14), we’ll be holding the first of two facilitated discussions to get community input on the name, colors and mascot for the new high school. I hope that you’ll join us at 6 p.m. in the boardroom at the Belton ISD Administration Building (400 N. Wall St., Belton) and share your ideas.

If you can’t make it then, we’ll be hosting a second session for the community at 6 p.m. on August 28. We’ll have a discussion with current high school students at 5 p.m. on August 24 and one for current middle school students at 5 p.m. on August 31. All of those will take place in the boardroom at our administration building.

I’d also invite you to give us your feedback through our website. You can find an online form with questions about the name, colors and mascot at bisd.net/communityform.

In May, voters approved issuing bonds to fund the construction of a new high school, a new elementary school and two smaller projects. That facilities plan is the result of input from hundreds of parents, teachers and other community members. As we continue to move forward with this plan, it is important for your voice to be heard.

Sincerely,

Susan Kincannon, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Marianne Ward, a member of our sales team and mother of Belton ISD children, said some people are upset about the idea of their child not being a part of the Belton Tigers' athletic or academic traditions if they attend the new school. That concern will undoubtedly be a voiced at the public meetings.

What are your thoughts or concerns about the new school? Let us and other members of the community know in the comments section.
