Killeen police are searching for the driver of a silver Dodge Charger that reportedly struck a child around Noon Sunday, then sped away.

Police say the hit-and-run in the 800 block of Jefferis Avenue was reported at 12:12 PM. When officers arrived, they found a 5-year-old boy seriously injured. He was transported to Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Police could not comment on the child's condition.

KWTX reports that the injured child was chasing a ball into the street when he was hit, and that he thrown into the air by the impact of the vehicle.

Witnesses told police a late model, silver Dodge Charger with black diagonal stripes was traveling south along Jefferis when it struck the child. The driver of the Charger reportedly stopped further up the block, at which time a late-model, red Ford Mustang which appeared to have been traveling with the Charger stopped along side the vehicle. After a few moments, both cars left the scene headed south toward Zephyr Road.

Anyone with information about either vehicle or their drivers, or anyone who may have helpful information about this incident, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (254) 526-8477 or online at bellcountycrimestoppers.com.
