With February in full swing, it is important to remember that this is Black History Month as well. Many special events are taking place across the country to celebrate Black contributions and voices, and Central Texas is no exception.

Central Texas College will be offering movie nights to the public, screening select films in support of the month.

It all kicks off on February 10th at 6:30 PM with "The Great Debaters", which won Denzel Washington the BET Best Actor award in 2008..

This will be followed by “The Harlem Hellfighters” on February 13th. This movie is about the 15th regiment of the New York National Guard, which was an all African- American combat regiment.

Then they will play "Harriet" on February 20th, which tells the heroic story of the famous Harriet Tubman and her escape from slavery.

The final movie in the Black History Month lineup is "Buffalo Soldiers" on the 27th. It is about the racial tension between soldiers after the Civil War as they fight against Native American attacks. This movie won the American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Movies of the Week/Pilots in 1998.

As with almost everywhere else, CDC guidelines will be followed, including wearing face masks as well as social distancing, which will be aided by limiting the number of people inside each show.

The movies will be played at the Mayborn Science Theatre on campus, which has the famous 60-foot dome screen. No matter where you sit, you will have a great view of these films!

As a CTC student, I am happy about this lineup of movies to honor Black History Month and I can't wait to see them on the big screen.

If you're staying home due to the pandemic or want to explore more films about Black experiences in America, here's a list of movies you ought to check out.
