If you've got old chemicals, batteries, and paint cluttering up your garage, closet, or shed, you can get rid of them safely and responsibly this Saturday at the Killeen Special Events Center.

On June 13, from 9 AM to 2 PM, the City of Killeen will help you out free of charge. Here's what you can bring for proper disposal:

  • Florescent bulbs/tubes
  • Cooking oil
  • Petroleum products
  • Paints
  • Pesticides/Herbicides
  • Antifreeze
  • Acids/other chemicals
  • Used oils
  • Household cleaners
  • Batteries

There are some things they ask you do not bring:

  • Tires
  • Fire alarms
  • Smoke detectors
  • Explosives
  • Pressurized containers
  • Brush

The event is open to residents of Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills, and San Saba Counties, and you'll need to bring proof of residency to participate.

In case you've never been, you'll find the Killeen Special Events Center at
3301 S. WS Young Drive.

I also recommend wearing a mask while participating as a courtesy to those helping you out. Most of us are out and about as Texas continues the re-opening process, but COVID-19 hasn't magically vanished and we can still do our part to help slow the spread as much as possible.

Saturday's event is an opportunity to help ensure that chemicals and harmful materials don't end up in our water and soil. If you're like me, you probably have some old paint or antifreeze in your shed that's taking up valuable space, so take it to Killeen this weekend and get rid of it the responsible way.

If you have any questions or concerns, give the City of Killeen a call at (254) 554-7572 or (254) 501-7785.
