DPS Troopers in Texas are no strangers to riding on school buses. It's one of the best ways to catch motorists who do not obey traffic laws when it comes to school buses.

The law in our state says a driver traveling in either direction, has to stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped and operating a signal. As a driver, you cannot continue until the bus is back in motion or the signal is turned off.

KXXV reports that several communities in East Texas are having issues with motorists not obeying the law around school buses. Troopers in Anderson, Henderson, Van Zandt, Cherokee, Smith, Rains, Wood, Camp, Upshur, Gregg, Marion, Harrison, Rusk, and Panola counties will all take turns riding the buses to see if drivers are obeying the law.

Some things to remember when approaching a school bus:

  • Always watch out for student pedestrians
  • Slow down and watch for kids waiting near bus stops
  • Watch for kids who may not be paying attention and step into the street
  • Know the traffic laws regarding a school bus in Texas
