We've all noticed the disturbing trend of shrinking portion sizes in bags of snacks over the past couple of decades, but one baking group on Facebook is proving that even the tiniest cost cutting measure can throw the universe entirely out of whack.

The Wedding Cookie Table Community is a Facebook group dedicated to preserving time-honored baking traditions, sharing recipes, and allowing users to ask and answer questions to help each other out.

A couple of weeks ago, group administrator Wendy Chianello noticed that the Hershey's Kisses she'd bought to decorate her confections didn't look quite right. The tips were gone!

"Started to peel open my Hershey Kisses, I noticed that not one in the entire bag had a pointed tip," she wrote on Hershey's Facebook wall. "Sooo I called Hershey. After giving the barcode to the women on the phone, she comes back with 'oh yes Hershey has cut the tip off of all of these milk chocolate kisses because they only break off in transit'".

Since then, the baking group has been flipping out about the revelation that Hershey would actually lop off an iconic part of their product for such a flimsy reason. Their responses to the bite-size crisis have made national headlines, and while yes, there are very important issues that also need our attention, the internet is a big place and there's room for all of society's ills. Since chocolate is probably our #1 comfort food in trying times, I think it's only right to demand answers.

Jeff Beckman, a representative of Hershey's, did eventually respond to the controversy. Pennlive.com shared Beckman's statement, which reads as follows and doesn't actually address the allegation:

"We love our Kisses as much as our consumers. We make more than 70 million Kisses a day here in Hershey, Pa., and we want each of them looking as great as they taste. The iconic, conical shape is one of the reasons families have loved Kisses for generations. We shape the tip on our classic, solid Milk and Dark Chocolate Kisses to create that iconic appearance. And while there has always been some variability in that process, we are working to improve the appearance because it’s as important to us as it is to our fans.”

Um...okay, guys. Does that mean the flat top is here to stay? Or did someone at the factory trip and hit the wrong button?

Yeesh.

So, have you bought any defective Kisses lately? What are your thoughts?
