Baylor University Confirms Tuberculosis Case As Students Return To Campus
As students head back to class at Baylor in Waco, comes word of a case of tuberculosis on campus.
Baylor Community Informed of Isolated Tuberculosis Case
Officials at Baylor University confirm an active case of tuberculosis within the campus population. Dr. Linda Livingstone, President of Baylor University, first shared the update in her weekly newsletter to the campus network, which includes students, faculty, employees, and families.
Where is The Infected Individual?
According to Baylor, the infected individual has been absent from campus grounds for several weeks, which extends back prior to the arrival of students for the autumn term.
How Is TB Transmitted?
According to the CDC, “TB germs can get into the air when a person with active TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, speaks, or sings. These germs can stay in the air for several hours, depending on the environment germs are more likely to spread in indoor areas or other places with poor air circulation (such as a closed vehicle) than in outdoor areas.”
Precautionary Measures Are Underway
Baylor Health Services is coordinating with county health officials to trace and directly reach out to anyone who might have had close exposure to the patient. Baylor says if you do not receive direct notification from the school’s medical team, you are all good. Anyone who is contacted, however, is strongly advised to schedule a medical evaluation ASAP.
