Killeen ISD Honoring One Of First African American Graduates

High school football in Killeen, Texas is set to begin very soon. With teams stepping out onto the gridiron, many friends and families with be traveling to a stadium to watch our favorite Friday night spectacle. One stadium in Killeen will soon be given a new name in honor of a legendary local figure.

The Chaparral Bobcats will be taking on the Killeen Kangaroos on Friday. Before the game is set to kickoff however, the stadium will honored with the name of Joseph L. Searles, III Stadium. Joseph L. Searles was an very important student from the city.

Joseph L. Searles Significance to Killeen

Searles was one of the first African American graduates from Killeen High School in 1959. After graduating high school, Searles played football in college for Pratt Junior College, located in Kansas, as well as Kansas State University. Searles also graduated with a political science degree. Following graduation, he took the field for the New York Giants for one season.

Searles was successful off the field as well. He obtained a law degree from the George Washington School of Law. In 1970. Searles was the first ever African American floor broker in the New York Stock Exchange. Searles also became the Vice President of the Public Finance Division at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company, which is now known as J.P Morgan.

Dedication Ceremony

The ceremony for Searles will begin at 6:30 PM on Friday, August 26th. Searles' surviving family will be in attendance. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to buy tickets early and arrive early.

A while back, I asked the good people of Temple if they could picture a good restaurant to fill the lot on North General Bruce Drive where the soon to be torn down Long John Silver's stood.

This was before it was announced that a Dutch Bros. Coffee location would open there (which was one of the places I predicted as a contender in our article).

So now Dutch Bros. is open in that spot, but the responses to my survey were interesting because they paint a picture of just how diverse Temple's population is. People recommended some familiar restaurants with locations in the surrounding area, but also a few I'd never even heard of.
