Killeen Soldier who became El Paso Hero found dead

Glendon Oakley, who made national headlines last year as the El Paso hero, has died.

Oakley, an Ellison High School graduate, was found dead on post at Fort Bliss in El Paso. The news was confirmed by an email sent to the Killeen Daily Herald. No foul play is suspected.

After a deadly shooting in El Paso last summer, Oakley claimed he saved numerous children from the shooter, who killed 22 people inside a nearby Walmart.

Oakley told reporters "I tried to pick up as many as I could (kids) and bring them with me"

Oakley also made headlines when he was arrested back in October 2019 on a desertion charge:

According to Miltary.com, Oakley served as an automated supply logistical specialist, assigned to 504th Composite Supply Company, 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade.

Condolences to his family. He was only 23 years old.
